Trump described the process as “witch hunt” and defended Netanyahu as a “big hero”.
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday called on Israel to abolish the ongoing trial with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces charges of corruption. He did so through his social network Truth Social. TASR informed about this, referring to DPA and AFP.
The US President, who himself faced many allegations he considered politically motivated and described them as “witch hunt”, said he had just learned that “Bibi” – his nickname for Netanyahu – was summoned to court.
Trump’s support for Netanyahu
“Bibi and I have just gone through hell, we fought against a very hard and brilliant long -time enemy of Israel, Iran, and Bibi could not be better, sharper or stronger in his love for the incredible Holy Land,” Trump wrote.
“Such a witch hunt for a person who has given so much is unimaginable for me,” the US President wrote in his contribution. Trump urged that the trial “immediately canceled” or to be awarded the grace “as a great hero who has done so much for his state”.
Accusations against Netanyahu
The process against Netanyahu has been going on for more than five years. Netanyahu is accused of fraud, embezzlement and bribery. According to the indictment, the Prime Minister allegedly received gifts from the wealthy acquaintances of tens of thousands of dollars in exchange for helping in the issue of personal and business interests. At the same time, he allegedly pursued advantageous regulations for the owners of media companies in exchange for favorable news about himself and his family. He denied Netanyahu the accusation and claimed to be the victim of “witch hunt”.
This is the first case in Israel’s history when the acting Prime Minister was brought to justice, DPA writes. The trial may take several years.
