The 20th International Congress of Investigative of Abraji (Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism) will offer, from July 10 to 13, in São Paulo, more than 150 activities that address journalistic techniques and discuss topics such as challenges in the profession, use and coverage of the environment.

Lectures and workshops will be promoted at the event, with the participation of international personalities such as the editor of The Clinic Nicolás Sepúlveda, specializing in investigating political and business corruption, and Emilia Diaz-Struck, executive director of GIJN (Global Investigative Journalism Network) and with experience in award-winning work such as Panama and Pandora Papers.

There are also highlights activities with reflection on changes in recent decades in journalism, security techniques for reporters, transformations in newsrooms and tips for self -employed professionals.

In Congress programming, there will be room for a tribute in memory of journalists (1943-2019), Joel Silveira (1918-2007) and Tim Lopes, tortured and killed in 2002 while reporting in Rio de Janeiro.

Other journalists, such as Caco Barcellos, Elio Gaspari, and Miriam Leitão, will also be honored. Another professional who will receive tribute is José Hamilton Ribeiro, who will turn 90 in August and has been awarded seven times with the Esso Award.

The program with lectures and workshops is scheduled to take place from 9am to 6pm in four days, with face -to -face, online and hybrid activities.

On the 13th, a Sunday, the focus will be on the use of data for the production of reports. Activities on programming languages, use of artificial intelligence and georeferencing with QGIS, among other topics are planned.

In addition to the workshops, there will be a dynamic panel with the presentation of data projects with journalists from different vehicles.

Activities occur amid concern about the circulation of an antimedia rhetoric that has caused the increase in the number of attacks on journalists by non -state agents.

Abraji survey points to the increase in the severity of episodes of press attacks, despite the decrease in 2024 of the case registration compared to the previous year (from 330 to 210).

The entity found the increase in cases of physical aggression, threat, intimidation or destruction of equipment – they represented 41% of the total of 2024 and 38% of the total in 2023.

In addition, it is the first time since the beginning of monitoring in 2021 that ordinary citizens were mainly responsible for the attacks, surpassing state agents.

They represented 39% of attackers, compared to 31% classified as state agents. In the previous year, 56% of aggressors were classified as state -owned companies, followed by ordinary citizens, who totaled 24%.
