The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, said, this Thursday (26), that the UN Climate Conference to be held in November in Brazil, “it needs to be a new reference,” according to AFP statements in London during Climate Action Week. The thirtieth United Nations Conference on Climate Change, also called COP 30, will be held in Belém do Pará between November 10 and 21 this year. Marina Silva says she believes that the agreements achieved in previous editions of the conference must be implemented in COP30.

“COP30 should be this new framework of creating a ballast to implement the decisions we have made over the years,” said the minister. “After 10 years of the Paris Agreement [a COP 21, de 2015]where we set a lot of commitments, rules, architecture, negotiation, […] Now we only have a way to move forward, which is to implement, implement and implement, ”he added. Marina Silva participates in London of Climate Action Week, an annual event celebrated in the British capital and gathers organizations, communities and individuals to find solutions for climate change until Sunday.

“We have already exceeded 1.5 degree [Celsius] We are already experiencing the effects of climate change, now we have the ethical imperative to implement what we have already decided, ”continued the holder of the Lula government’s environment and climate change. The minister stressed that what was decided at COP28, performed in 2023 in Dubai. Dismantling of fossil fuels, ensuring that this is an effort from all countries, ”he said.

For Marina Silva, implementing the commitments achieved in other COPs “is not an action in Brazil, but from 196 countries, in a very difficult geopolitical context, with the United States from Paris Agreement and where we are living wars that, in addition to draining resources for more war armaments, more security, are also undermining cooperation and solidarity among peoples”. She expects from COP30 to emerge “concrete measures regarding financing.” Finally, the minister argued that Brazil is working to combat deforestation of the Amazon.

“In Brazil we got a reduction in deforestation of 46% in the Amazon, 32% in all over the country and we have a commitment of zero deforestation by 2030,” he said. “But this is not the reality of all countries, so the TTF [Taxa sobre Transações Financeiras] It is fundamental because it enables means of financing for those who protect forests, ”he said.
