ENTITIES ASK LULA BLACK NAME TO THE TSE – 06/27/2025 – Panel

Social movements and civil society entities sent a letter to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva defending the appointment of Vera Lúcia Santana Araújo, currently ministering in the (Superior Electoral Court), for a permanent vacancy of the Court.

According to the message, signed by more than 100 organizations, to occupy a starting chair in the highest electoral court in Brazil.

“His presence as a holder in the summit of the Electoral Court will certainly contribute to the strengthening of racial equity policies and representativeness of historically vulnerable groups, such as the black population, quilombola, indigenous, peripheral, women and LGBTqiapn+ from Brazil,” says the letter, who was also addressed to ministers Ricardo Lewandowski (Justice), Gleisi Hoffmann (institutional relations) and and institutional relations) Jorge Messias (General Advocacy of the Union).

The articulation was led by Black Coalition for Rights, Institute of Black Reference Peregum, Unified Black Movement and Geledes.

According to the entities, if choosing Vera Lúcia, Lula “will reaffirm his commitment to the interests of the majority of the Brazilian population and recognize the J system as fundamental to the guarantee of rights of all people.”

The current substitute minister makes up a triple list only of women alongside Estela Aranha, advisor to Minister Cármen Lúcia and former advisor to the Ministry of Justice, and lawyer Cristina Maria Gama Neves da Silva, Judge-Substituta of TRE-DF. President Lula should make his choice in the coming weeks.
