In Slovenia, after three decades, a fatal case after the bite became the most poisonous home snake – the northern spindle. The eighty -year -old from Gorenjska bite the viper in her hand during the evening walk. She lost consciousness within twenty minutes. Despite the intervention of the rescuers, her condition deteriorated rapidly and the patient succumbed to poisoning before being transported to the hospital, writes the website.
“Her hand swollen immediately, after a 20-minute walk, she collapsed. After waking up, she was suffering from severe abdominal pain and difficulty breathing,” He said prof. Miran Brvar, Head of the Center of Clinical Toxicology and Pharmacology of the University Medical Center in Ljubljana. He added that artificial breathing and resuscitation were already needed on the arrival of the rescuers, but unfortunately the journey to the hospital was in vain.
Over the past year, Slovenian toxicological centers have recorded 24 cases bites by a viper or a relative of the spindle. Seven patients received an antidote. In stock is a serum for approximately 20 people, the stock is deployed in Ljubljana and Maribor.
According to Brvara, this was the first death of the headstock since the beginning of the 1990s. This is the first case in about 30 years. In Croatia, three deaths have been recorded in 15 years, but in Europe such cases are rather exceptional. In particular, young children and seniors with heart, blood vessel or lung diseases are particularly at risk.
