Final report of the Spanish government clarifies that the first shot detected occurred in grenade, about 500 km southeast of Badajoz
After weeks of speculation about the causes of the severe blackout that affected the Iberian Peninsula on April 28, a new update by the Spanish government sheds light on the complexity of the incident and undermines the idea that the origin was at Iberdrola’s Balboa Central Núñez, located in Badajoz.
According to the final technical report, released last week, “a unique flaw was not identified that, by itself, explain the fall of the system,” if admitted before that the electric collapse was due to a “chain of events” of high complexity.
The investigation, which involved the electrical Red Española (Ree) and independent experts, concluded that “it was a combination of conditions that led the system to the limit, triggering a chain reaction.”
Contrary to the first information advanced by technical sources and the Spanish press – which pointed to Iberdrola’s central as the incident point, the report clarifies that the first shot detected occurred in grenade, about 500 km southeast of Badajoz.
Previously Iberdrola, questioned by the Spanish newspaper, had already rejected any responsibility, accusing, as well as the Spanish executive, the rees of “reckless and negligent” management.
On the other hand, the Spanish electric argues that it complied with all the protocols established “impeccably” and criticized the operator for not being able to control the system in the face of disturbances.
