Kegulena, known as Champsocephalus Gunnari, is a species of perch -shaped fish from the Bielanych family. It is valued by both dietitians and fish gourmets. However, it is currently rarely found on Polish tables.

The natural environment of this fish are the cool, Antarctic areas of the southern hemisphere, mainly in the waters of the Kergulen and Georgia archipelago, i.e. southern Atlantic and southern Pacify. Kergulena lives at large depths – Usually from 100 to 500 meters, but it happens to find up to 700 meters below the ocean surface. It is an endemic species for this region and plays an important role in the ecosystem there as food for larger fish, sea birds and mammals.

Kergulena reaches a length of up to 60 cm (usually 25 to 40 cm), and its characteristic feature is transparent blood. This is the result of a lack of hemoglobin, which is a unique adaptation to extremely cold and well -oxygenated antarctic waters.
