Public Prosecution Service investigates suspicion of negligence, according to local press
A tragedy involving the Smart Fit gym network is causing revolt and commotion on social networks. Reina Sabas, 39, died on May 20 while performing a leg exercise at the unit located in Tlatelolco, Mexico City. The information is from Public Metro.
According to witnesses, the student would have been encouraged by a personal trainer to raise more weight than she could stand. During the exercise she got sick, passed out and could not resist. What most shocked the public, however, was the behavior of the instructors after the incident.
Instead of immediately triggering the emergency service, two teachers tried to remove the body of the victim from the third floor of the gym, according to a friend of Reina’s own. The scene was recorded by security cameras and quickly spread through social networks, generating indignation.

The Attorney General’s Office of Mexico has determined the closure of the Smart Fit unit and opened investigation for manslaughter when there is no intention to kill. The coaches involved were initially detained, but released after testimony.
Since 2024, at least six deaths have been recorded in different Smart Fit units in Mexico, including cases in the regions of Iztacalco, Iztapalapa, Gustavo A. Madero and Cuauutlán Izcalli. Experts have criticized the absence of emergency protocols and the lack of trained staff for risk situations.
Given the repercussion of the case, Mexican parliamentarians proposed the obligation of first aid equipment and presence of health professionals in all gyms in the country.
To date, the Smart Fit gym network has not officially commented on what happened.
