At a joint press conference with the German office, he also assured that the migration policy would not affect their relations. According to him, the situation is manageable.
Austria knows what it means to face migration pressure. In such words, the Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker responded on Friday in Berlin to the question of a journalist concerning the rejection of migrants by German authorities at the Austro-German border. TASR received the report from DPA.
Stocker at a joint press conference with his host, German office Friedrich Merz, said that Austria has been protecting its borders since 2015.
“Austria knows from his own experience from 2015 and 2022, which means being exposed to migration pressure,” said Stocker.
Protection may be necessary
He stressed that the protection of borders within the European Union was not the intended goal, “but in this situation may be necessary”. He added that the numbers of migrants on the Austro-German border are manageable.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt introduced stricter controls in early May to limit illegal migration and ordered that asylum seekers were refused on the German border.
Many EU countries have suspended the application of free movement within the Schengen area and have begun to be controlled by persons crossing the internal borders.
