The United States Senate rejected on Friday (27) a resolution proposed by Democrats aimed at restricting President Donald Trump’s ability to adopt military actions against Iran without the approval of Congress.

Senator Tim Kaine, a Democrat of the State of Virginia, presented the bill last week under the 1973 war law, before Trump authorized attacks on three Iranian nuclear facilities.

The resolution would require the approval of Congress for any further attacks on Iran that were not in self -defense or due to imminent danger.

“I think this week’s events are too big to be relegated to a person’s decision,” Kaine said in the Senate plenary

“War is too big a matter to be left to the mood,” he added.

The legislators voted against the advance of the Senate Plenary for 53 to 47.

Republican Senator Rand Paul voted with the Democrats to advance the proposal. Democratic Senator John Fetterman voted against.

This Friday’s vote represented a significant change in relation to a similar vote on war powers in 2020, related to Iran, in which eight Republicans voted with the Democrats-seven of which are still in the Senate.

Chamber can propose similar action

The US Chamber may present its own resolution on war powers, led by the Democrats, after July 4.

Republican deputy Thomas Massie, who faced a strong reaction from the government for criticizing the attacks on Iran, had also proposed a resolution on war powers, but decided not to present it in the midst of ceasing to Iran-Israel conflict.

Mayor Mike Johnson has harshly criticized parliamentarians for demanding that Trump receive Congress approval for Iran’s attacks, adding that he does not believe that the law of war powers is constitutional.
