Álvaro Leyva, former Colombian ex -chancellor during this government, met two months ago in the United States with advisors close to the Donald Trump administration to seek his support for a plan to make Gustavo Petro fall. According to audios to which the country has had access and sources close to Republican congressmen, Leyva tried to approach Marco Rubio, Secretary of State, with the intention of helping to exert “international pressure” that culminated with the departure of the power of, president of Colombia. The White House, according to these same sources, never had the proposal into consideration.
“He told us that he had all the tools to execute a plan and take it out. His place would occupy it [la vicepresidenta]. He had evidence that Petro could not continue office and that in case this was ahead, the president would not have the capacity to respond. The help of the Americans was very important, ”says one of the people who met in April with Leyva, 82. The former chancellor has not answered the questions about this matter that this newspaper has asked him.
The conservative politician, one of Petro’s maximum confidence at the beginning of the legislature, narrated in these meetings that the president was an erratic man with serious drug addiction problems and that kept evidence that was disabled to exercise the presidency. He talked about an agreement in which “armed and unintended actors” should be involved, explains the same source. In one of the audios in which Leyva talks to someone unidentified, he is heard saying: “You have to get that guy. That guy presides over the elections [las presidenciales que están por celebrarse en 2026]… is that, in addition, public order overflowed. That cannot happen, but with a great national agreement, where it has to be, Eln, those of. (…) I have spoken with the most important guilds (…). It is that here those of the Gulf clan have come, a very fucking pod. This country goes to the mismatch. ”
The former chancellor and his son, Jorge Leyva, have good contacts between the ranks of the United States Republican Party. In this way they asked their friends to organize a meeting with Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart, representative by Florida. “I was in the United States and with a type of front row: Mario Díaz-Balart. The Díaz-Balart are those behind the Secretary of State,” Leyva explains in the recordings. They also intended to see each other with another well -known congressman in Miami, Carlos Antonio Giménez.
In parallel, in which he assured that Petro was drug addict. In them he had episodes in which the president was absent in an inexplicably or behaved strangely with other foreign leaders. It also accused Laura Sarabia, the president’s right hand, of supplying the doses and hiding her vices. Both Petro and Sarabia deny these accusations and ensure that they are a defamation. The politician thought that these alleged revelations would be the first push to defend Petro. “I can’t stay where I am. Here we go halfway, from a path that is 20 more days. In another different audio, he insists that Petro must leave the position and that this must be done with a national agreement. He thinks that a valid interlocutor in this process could be Vicky Dávila, the former director of the magazine Week that journalism left to enter politics and aspire to win the 2026 elections. “He will not be president,” Leyva says in the recordings. “[Pero] It can be an interlocutor to say what is you, is Vicky (…). You have to enter and those who want. Those who really have. Because what do you get as a person, as an individual individual to this fuck? ”, And suddenly mentions the possibility of adding to Miguel Uribe, the candidate of the Democratic Center, the Álvaro Uribe party, which is in serious condition after a hitman in early June:“ No, this Uribe, Miguel Uribe, what does it represent? You have to put bad and good, but with representation. ”
The recordings to which the country has had access to the Colombian Secret Service. The president listened to them in his office and was very annoying. Then, during a speech, he accused Leyva of trying to perpetrate a coup against him, although he did not offer more details. The former chancellor, concerned about the president’s revelation, went to Madrid for security reasons.
Leyva wanted France Márquez to be the new president. In the audios he says that he is “on top of her” and that it was he who put it “to give that pod that night.” It refers to a live council of ministers in direct in which the president criticized his advisors harshly. After listening to the recordings, Petro asked France Márquez. “It was a moment of enormous tension between them. He said he felt betrayed. France replied that he had not acted behind him with Leyva, that it was not true. He insisted that he could not distrust her,” says someone who was present at that meeting. Petro demanded that he denied his participation in what he considers a plot against him, a kind of coup d’etat. She refused, and from that moment on the relationship between the two, which was already a strap, has become non -existent.
Petro considers that a person who granted all his confidence has betrayed him. When he assumed the presidency in 2022, he entrusted to Leyva any of the most important issues of his government, such as simultaneous negotiations with the different armed groups, known as total peace. He chose it because it was a veteran politician of conservative ideology, but who had been trying to specify agreements between the guerrillas and the successive governments. He also commissioned the restoration of relations with Venezuela given his good relationship with Chavismo. He became one of the closest people of the president, although some of the environment will distrust him for his fame as a conspirator. His departure from the government, occurred by accident, not by Petro’s decision. In November 2024, the Attorney General disabled him from his position at the express request of the President.
Leyva felt that he was separated from his position for having been loyal to Petro. I expected it to reward for it and play a new role in the government, even if it was external. At that time, Petro talked about bringing a national agreement, to the left and right, to carry out structural reforms. Leyva wanted to be the catalyst of that proposal and began to campaign on its own. However, that idea did not prosper and gradually faded. Petro stopped answering the calls and messages to Leyva, who felt betrayed, out of the play. His next movement was to publish the letters against the president and later involve in the plan to overthrow Petro the most powerful man in the world, Donald Trump. He did not get it.
