Civil Defense Alert for rainfall in RS; 9,621 are homeless

The Civil Defense of the State of Rio Grande do Sul this Saturday (28.jun.2025) a landslide alert in the north of RS, due to the region in the next 12 hours. He stressed the intermediate regions of Caxias do Sul, Passo Fundo and Santa Cruz do Sul and the Serra Gaucha region.

The agency warned of the possibility of punctual landslides, especially in urban backrests and locations with recent landslides, as well as any “Barrier Falls” on the banks of roads and highways of RS. There are 5 dead, 1 missing and 9,621 displaced.

The governor of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, (PSD), asked people to leave the areas of hills of hills. He stated that, with the support of the state government, the municipalities set up and suited shelters to receive people who have nowhere to go.

“Our concern at this time is that people leave the risk areas, river margins that will be impacted, hills of hills and avoid displacements that are avoidable”he said on a visit to the cities on alert.

Milk said that, due to the rains of recent weeks, the soil is already soaked, which increases the risk of landslides. In addition, with the return of intense precipitation, rivers like Jacuí tend to overflow, causing flooding.

Due to the high volumes of rain, the RS government has expanded the number of crisis offices. Established one in Torres and another in São Sebastião do Caí. The goal is to provide emergency care to the population. There are already 4 other assets: 1 of them of strategic nature, in Porto Alegre, and another 3 regionalized, in Caxias do Sul, Lajeado and Santa Cruz do Sul.

According to the Civil Defense, 171 municipalities reported some damage or complication. In Porto Alegre, which in 2024 by floods, there are teams of the organ monitoring the volume of rainfall and working with machines to improve water flow at risky sites.
