New rule vetoes cigarettes on beaches, parks, public gardens and bus stops with a fine that can reach R $ 4.8 thousand

Smoking on beaches, parks, public gardens and bus stops is banned in France from this Sunday (29.jun.25), according to a decree published by the country’s government. The measure also applies to outside areas of libraries, schools, pools and stadiums.

Failure to comply with the new standard may result in a fine of 135 to 750 euros.

The goal, according to the French Ministry of Health, is to reduce children’s exposure to cigarette smoke.

The measure, however, does not extend to electronic cigarettes or the terraces of coffees and restaurants, which will continue to be released to smokers.

The perimeter of ban in front of schools and places frequented by minors will be at least 10 meters.

In 2008, France prohibited the use of cigarettes in closed environments such as restaurants and nightclubs. Smoking rates in the country, according to the French Observatory on Drugs and Additive Trends, have been falling: 23.1% of the French population smokes daily, the lowest index recorded since the end of the 1990s.
