From January 2026, Starlink will require the presentation of documents and information from all registered users in the states that make up the Legal Amazon
NA has announced a new deal with the satellite internet company, aiming to curb the use of its services in illegal activities, focusing on clandestine mining in the Amazon. This is the first formal understanding between the company and the Brazilian authorities, marking a significant step in combating this problem. The term of commitment includes the implementation of measures aimed at traceability and control of users who may be using the internet for illicit purposes, especially in vulnerable regions, such as indigenous lands and conservation areas. From January 2026, Starlink will require the presentation of documents and information from all registered users in the states that make up the legal Amazon.
In addition, Starlink has pledged to transfer property from terminals that are seized during illegal mining operations to the competent authorities. The company should also provide registration and geolocation information of terminals located in areas that are under investigation, as well as blocking access to users identified as participants in illegal mining activities. The agreement, which has an initial validity of two years, may be renewed at the end of this period. The document was signed by Starlink lawyer, Patricia Helena Marta Martins, and prosecutor André Porreca, representing the MPF. The Attorney’s Office stressed that the Amazon faces a serious environmental crisis due to illegal mining, whose operation became more efficient with the advancement of internet technologies.
