Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived on Sunday for an official visit to Kyrgyzstan, his plane landed at Čolpon-Ata airport, TASR reports according to TASS.
Lavrov will meet with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Žaparova and will negotiate with his departmental counterpart Žeenbek Kulubayev. The Russian Minister is also to participate in the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Collective Security Treaty, TASS reports.
Meetings are focused on cooperation
The spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry Marija Zacharovová said that meetings with Kyrgyz officials will focus on cooperation in political, commercial, economic, military-technical, cultural, humanitarian and other areas in the context of expanding multilateral relationships.
There will also be an exchange of views on the most pressing issues of regional and global agenda and the ways of developing Eurasian integration, the Kremlin said.
Kyrgyzstan, which was once considered a “refuge for freedom of press in Central Asia”, has been experiencing a sharp decline in media independence in recent years, the Reuters news agency explains. There are IK repression, arrest, legislative pressure and closing of critical media.
