Article 14 of the Federal Constitution establishes that electoral enlistment and vote are mandatory from 18 years, and optional to 16 and 17 years old, illiterate people and over 70 years old. The age considered for compliance with the requirement is what the voter has on the date of the election.
Candidacies
Already to apply for an elective position, the person needs to have the following ages to compete for the positions:
- 18 years – Councilman;
- 21 years -Federal, state or district deputy, mayor, deputy mayor and judge of peace;
- 30 years -Governor and Deputy Governor of State or Federal District;
- 35 years -President of the Republic, Vice President and Senator.
According to Article 11 of the Elections Law (), the minimum constitutional age of eligibility has as reference the date of possession of the elected, except when fixed in 18 years. In this case, it will be verified on the deadline for the application for registration of the application.
