Jeannette Jara, former Minister of Labor of Boric, won the primaries of the governor coalition; Election will be in November
The 51-year-old former Minister of Labor won on Sunday (29.Jun.2025) the primaries of the ruling coalition with 60% of the votes. With the victory, the policy of the Communist Party of Chile (left) will compete in the presidential election of November as successor of (Large Front, left).
Jara surpassed (28%), (9%) and (2.7%). Chilean legislation does not allow reelection, so the coalition summoned the internal election.
This is the first time the Communist Party leads a broad left alliance in the presidential race. Jara gained visibility by implementing the reduction of working hours from 45 to 40 hours and leading the proposal for pension reform.
Created in a poor neighborhood of Santiago, the capital of the country, Jara has a law graduate and was president of the University of Chile Students Federation before entering politics.
Primary
Participation in primaries was low: about 1.4 million voters, below 1.7 million of 2021. According to analysts, low attendance represents a challenge for the governing candidacy.
The opposition has not yet made its primaries. Candidates have until August 18 to register. The 1st round of the election is scheduled for November 16 and, if necessary, the 2nd round will be on December 14.
Now, Jara faces the challenge of unifying the center-left and competing with the favorites in the polls: (Republican Chilean Party) and (Independent Democratic Union), both right-wing.
