The Chilean left has chosen the candidate who will represent them in the first round of the presidential statements of November 16 against :, militant of the Communist Party. With 77.5%of the voted votes, the Public Administrator, lawyer and magister in public management has obtained a forceful 60.5%, compared to the, which reaches 27.6%. The representative of the Broad Front of Gabriel Boric, has been in third place with 8.9%, while the one of the Socialist Regionalist Federation (FRVS), arrives last with 2.9%. The result of this primary, in turn, entails a great blow to the moderate forces of progressivism -found by Tohá in this internal competition -that remain.
It has been a primary marked by the very low participation, although it was normally developed throughout the territory and, as usually happens in Chile, the counts have been rapid and the results – already categorical – begin to be known less than an hour after the closing of the tables, at 18.00 Chilean hour. According to the first projections, a little more than one million people, in Chile and abroad, would have participated. Although it was a voluntary vote – they were only excluded from voting affiliates to matches that did not have primaries. In the primary of 2021, where only two games with two candidates competed, 1.7 million voters attended. This level of participation, however, is not enough to scare or far to the rights and, on the contrary, represents a sign of weakness. If fewer people arrived than those who participated in the primaries on the right in 2021 that four years ago lost the coin -1.3 million -it was bad news for the Chilean ruling, as happened. With the election of a unique candidate of the Communist Party, however, the Chilean presidential is polarized. Kast, on the extreme right, has been installed in recent weeks even over Matthei, the moderate economist who was the favorite for months to reach the government in March 2026, when the Boric administration ends.
The unity on the left will be a great test from tonight. Especially Matthei who, with Tohá out of competition, will try to conquer the moderate sectors of the center and center that are not willing to support a letter from the radical left.
Jara’s candidacy, at least publicly, seemed different from the Chilean Communist Party, a community that (as was the case with the Italian PC and the Euro-Romunism of Enrico Berlinguer), which continues to be defined as Marxist-Leninist and, therefore, has not taken the concept of dictatorship of the proletariat of his doctrine. The Chilean PC has international commitments with regimes of Cuba, Laos, Vietnam or North Korea and its president, Lautaro Carmona, participated last April, for example, of the II International Antifascist Forum, held in Moscow, Russia. The former minister of work, however, has marked distances with the leadership of her party, on substantial issues as the need for a new constituent process. But it is not evident if it will have the strength to be able to open its own path, less with the level of participation with which it was chosen and an amount of votes similar to that of its party partner, Jadue, four years ago, 692,862.
