Company is accused of hindering the migration of users to competitors; Big Tech had tried to file the case, but had the request denied by the court
Federal Judge Julien Neals has determined that Apple must face the United States Department of Justice process that accuses the company of illegally mastering the US market for smartphones. THE big tech had asked to file the case.
The case claims that Apple uses restrictions on application developers and third party devices to prevent users from migrating to competitors, dominating the market illegally.
The decision allows the case to proceed with what can become a judicial battle of years for Apple against government inspectors who seek to reduce what they describe as barriers to competition with the iPhone.
The process, presented in March 2024, specifically aims at Apple’s restrictions and rates on application developers, as well as the technical obstacles that the company supposedly creates for third party devices and services. This includes smartwatches, digital wallets and messaging services that would compete with Apple’s own offers.
The Justice Department, along with several states and Washington, DC, claims that these practices eliminate competition.
