Block has until July 9 to reach a commercial agreement with the US; will try to negotiate lower rates for key sectors
The EU (European Union) is prepared to accept a 10% universal tariff over many of its exports to the United States, but seeks lower rates for key sectors, according to a report by the report by Bloomberg released this Monday (30.jun.2025).
The block wants the US to commit to reduced rates for pharmaceuticals, alcohol, semiconductors and commercial aircraft as part of any commercial agreement.
European negotiators are also pushing for quotas and exemptions to effectively reduce the 25% American tariff over cars and auto parts, as well as the 50% tariff on steel and aluminum.
The European Commission, which manages EU commercial affairs, sees this potential agreement as slightly favorable to the US, but considers it an acceptable commitment, the report added.
The EU has until July 9 to reach a trade agreement with Donald Trump before tariffs on almost all European exports to the US increase to 50%.
