Genetically modified bacteria can convert old plastic into paracetamol

Would you have known it? Two of the most used pain relievers are made from precursor levels of crude oil – i.e. not refined oil -: ibuprofen, which is almost entirely based on petroleum variants, and paracetamol, which has been on the list of indispensable medicines of the World Health Organization (WHO) since 1977. Recently there is also a vegetable alternative that does not require crude oil and has pine resin as a starting material.
