Fabio Schiochet (Union-SC) was elected for two-year term and promises firm action in the defense of parliamentary ethics; He is the author of the Legislative Decree that revoked the increase in IOF rates

The was officially installed on Tuesday (1st) and elected as a new president the deputy Fabio Schiochet (Union-SC). The mandate in front of the board will be two years. The election fulfills the agreement signed during the choice of the president of the House (Republicans-PB), ensuring the command of the body responsible for ensuring the conduct of parliamentarians. Although União Brasil occupies three ministries in the government of the President (PT), Schiochet is considered opposing the Planalto Palace.

The parliamentarian leads the party’s state directory in and has already submitted proposals that confront the executive measures, such as the Legislative Decree project that revokes the increase in (tax on financial operations) rates – a theme that has generated a clash between Congress and the Government in recent weeks.

NEW PRESIDENT PROFILE

Fabio Schiochet has been in the House since 2019 and was reelected in 2022 with more than 50,000 votes. In 2024, he chaired the Consumer Protection Commission and previously commanded the Mines and Energy Commission. With passing through and, then, PSL, the party for which the former president was also elected in 2018, Schiochet joined União Brasil after the merger of the acronym with the DEM.

Its performance is marked by a critical stance in relation to the federal government and by guidelines linked to the economy and consumer protection. The expectation is that, ahead of the Ethics Council, the deputy prints a more rigorous profile in the analysis of parliamentary conduct.

STRATEGIC ROLE OF THE COUNCIL

The council of ethics and parliamentary decorum of the Chamber has as its main function to preserve the moral principles of legislative activity, ensure the dignity of the mandate and issue opinions on representations involving the breach of parliamentary decorum. It also responds to consultations from the Board of Directors, the commissions and deputies on topics related to ethics in the exercise of the mandate.

The installation of the board has been scheduled since April, but only now has been effective by decision of the mayor. With the definition of the presidency, the board’s work may be resumed, including analyzes of paralyzed disciplinary proceedings and evaluation of new complaints involving members of the house.

Schiochet’s conduct should give a new pace to discussions, especially in a politically tense year, with sensitive guidelines in debate and cases of parliamentary conduct under the observation of public opinion.
