Moscow continues to expand territorial control in Ukraine, according to the Institute for War Study, they control almost a fifth of the country. Intense struggles are mainly in the Donetsk region.
The advance of Russian troops in Ukraine has been accelerated in June for the third consecutive month and reached the largest range since November 2024. The Russian army occupied 588 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in June compared to 507 square kilometers in May, 379 square kilometers in April and 240 square kilometers in March. It results from an analysis of data from the US Institute for War Study (ISW), published on Tuesday by AFP.
The main Russian territorial gains relate to the Donetsk region
In addition to the first months of the war, which started in February 2022, only in October (610 square kilometers) and November (725 square kilometers) last year, Russia occupied more territory of Ukraine than in June 2025.
Two -thirds of the June territorial gains fall on the Donetsk area, where the most intense fighting is ongoing. Moscow is currently fully or partially checked by three quarters of the Donetsk region, while on the same day a year ago it was 61 percent.
However, the Russian army has also achieved an unprecedented procedure in other regions of Ukraine over the past year, where it occupied almost 200 square kilometers of territory.
By June 2025, the Russian army conquered nearly 5500 square kilometers
On June 8, the Russian army announced that it has entered the territory of the Dnepropetrov region for the first time since the beginning of the war, although it currently only checks only eight square kilometers there, according to ISW. However, the Ukrainian army denies that Russian forces would record some territorial gains in the Dnepropetrov region.
From July 2024 to June 2025, the Russian army conquered nearly 5500 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory compared to 1215 square kilometers in the previous twelve months.
At the end of June, Russia has completely or partially dominated almost 19 percent of Ukraine, says ISW.
