São Paulo, SP (Folhapress) – attacked the young socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani, who beat the primary democrats for New York City Hall. In an interview with Fox News on Sunday (29), the Republican said that if Mamdani is elected, he could cut federal transfers to the city if he “does not behave.”
“He will have to do the right thing, or New York will not receive any money. He needs to behave or will not have any resources,” said Trump.
The president also called Mamdani, a 33 -year -old Muslim politician, “a pure communist” and therefore classified his possible victory as “inconceivable”. The threat is not symbolic. According to The Guardian, more than $ 100 billion are all over New York through federal transfers and programs.
State deputy with progressive views, Mamdani shook Oo Estabishment of the Democratic Party by debating his main competitor, former state governor Andrew Cuomo, in the primaries.
The guidelines defended by Mamdani include free buses throughout the city, a network of public supermarkets managed by the city to cheapen prices, the freezing of rents and increased taxes on the richest.
In an interview with NBC also on Sunday, Mamdani denied being a communist and accused Trump of trying to divert the focus. “I am fighting for the same working people he promised to defend -and then betrayed,” he said about the president.
He defended his campaign, despite the resistance between some democrats -the state deputy has the backing of leaders of the Democratic socialist wing, such as Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Occortez, but the leader of the Democratic minority in the House, Hakeem Jeffries, told ABC that he is not yet ready to declare support for Mamdani. According to him, it is necessary to better understand the candidate’s view.
Other important party names, such as New York Governor Kathy Hochul, and Democratic leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, have not spoken here either.
Madani said he was not worried. “I think people are still being aware of this election,” he said. “What we are showing is that, by putting the workers first and returning to the roots of the Democratic Party, we actually have a way to get out of this moment when we face authoritarianism in Washington.”
Mamdani said the increase in taxes would serve to finance the assistance programs defended by him. “New York is the richest city in the richest country in history, and yet one in four New Yorkers live in poverty, while many others live in a constant cycle of anxiety,” he said in the interview.
The current mayor, Eric Adams, elected as Democrat, will apply to reelection as an independent candidate, after the Trump Department of Justice under the management of corruption against him -who fueled accusations of political favoritism, denied by Adams.
The Republican candidate is Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Community Surveillance Group Guardian Angels. Andrew Cuomo has not yet decided if he will remain in the dispute as independent.
Mamdani was born in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, Africa, and at the age of seven moved to New York with her parents, whose families have Indian origin. The son of a teacher from Columbia and a filmmaker, he became an American citizen in 2018.
He graduated in African studies by Bowdoin College. There, he created a Palestine Defense Group, one of the flags that raised in his mayor campaign. In 2020, he was elected state deputy.
Analysts point out that the deputy stood out with a speech focused on the needs of the population and dominating social networks, which he managed to connect with young people, marking a generational change.
