Survey of sanctions
President Trump surprised everyone by announcing the survey of sanctions Americans during a visit to Riade on May 13, stating that he wanted to “give new authorities in Damascus an opportunity for greatness.”
The next day, he also met with Syria’s interim president, Ahmad Al-Shareh, who led the radical Islamist rebel group coalition that toppled the Syrian President in December.
Since then, Washington has suspended most of his sanctions to facilitate the Syrian’s return to the international financial system And it is implementing authorizations to encourage new investments in the country.
The State Department issued an exemption under the “Caesar Law” for the protection of civilians in Syria. This 2020 law provided severe sanctions against any entity or company that cooperated with the deposed regime of Bashar al-Assad.
International sanctions since 1979
Syria, governed by the Assad clan for several decades, has been subject to international sanctions since 1979. These sanctions were reinforced after the Bashar al-Assad regime repressed the pro-democracy protests in 2011, which triggered the war.
The country of the Middle East is now dominated by the island Islands (HTS), which overthrew the regime of Bashar al-Assad.
The HTS, previously affiliated with al-Qaida, cut its ties with the ‘jihadist’ organization in 2016.
The US presidential decree will dismantle the general architecture around US sanctions, including the “national emergency” statement in 2004.
A European Union also suspended almost all other sanctions against Syria.
Still, some restrictions remain in force and the US also designates Syria as a terrorist sponsor and the group led by Al-Sharaa as a foreign terrorist organization.
State Department source has advanced to AP that Trump administration is reviewing these designations.
The US decision comes after Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar declared that Israel was “interested” in normalizing relations with Syria and Lebanon under Abraham’s deals.
Sponsored by the US President during his first term in the White House, the so -called Abraham agreements in 2020 allowed Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco and Sudan to establish formal ties with Israel.
