How and when to water the lawn in the summer?
In the summer, we water the lawn early in the morning (before sunrise) or late in the evening (after sunset). Avoid watering during the day when the sun is the strongest, because the water will quickly evaporate, and the drops on the leaves can cause burns. The watering frequency depends on the type of soil, weather and type of grass. Usually, the lawn needs about 25-30 mm of water a week. This can be checked by placing an empty container (e.g. fish can) on the lawn during watering. It’s best to use sprinkles that distribute water evenly. Avoid watering with a stream of water, which can rinse the seeds and damage the turf. Water the lawn less often but more abundant. This will encourage the roots to grow deeper, which will make the lawn more resistant to drought. Of course, on hot days, increase the watering frequency, and in rainy days water less often or not (depending on the intensity of the rain).
How and when to mow the grass?
Mowing wet grass is a basic mistake in lawn care. Wet blades can cause uneven cutting and damage to the roots and the mower. However, mowing in full sun can dry the lawn, so the grass is best shortened on cloudy, but rainless days. The second golden rule of lawn care is mowing to the right height. The first mowing should be higher than usual. In the case of commercial lawns, the recommended mowing height is 5-6 cm, in the case of decorative lawns-3-4 cm. The next ones should shorten the blades by a maximum of 1/3 of the lawn height. Principle number three applies to the frequency of mowing. This should be done regularly at intervals of 7-10 days. It is also important to mow the grass in different directions and not forget to water it after each mowing.
Can you sow the grass in the summer?
You can sow the grass in the summer, but this is not the best term. In June, July or August, temperatures are far too high. Young blades are very sensitive, burning sunshine and drought will make instead of lush green and thick turf, we will have thinned yellow squares. This is obviously not the rule, but the risk that the sharp sun burn the blades, very high.
When to sow the grass? Best date
According to gardening textbooks, the best time to set up a lawn is time from April to the end of May. There is no risk of frost, we can still count on heavy rainfall, so the grass is not threatened with drought. Seeds have an optimal temperature for germination and later grass growth. Before summer, hot days, the lawn will have a good root. If we sit the grass in February or March, frequent frosts can destroy seedlings frequent during this period. Before sowing, it is worth checking the weather forecast for the day when you plan to sow the grass. The sunny aura will be the best. The downpour will not be beneficial for seeds, even though it lasts, it likes moist soil. You also need to prepare the area well for sowing. Remove larger stones, weeds and remains of plant roots that can hinder the later growth of grass. Appropriate soil is also important. The ideal substrate on the lawn is fertile and permeable ground. Therefore, before sowing, it is good to loosen it, add sand and tooth decay. It is also worth checking the soil pH, which should be from 5.5 to 7. If the soil reaction is lower, and thus too sour, it is worth adding lime to the ground.
