SP – Enel/SP/Blackout – General – View of Enel’s substation in the Anhembi neighborhood, in the northern part of the city of São Paulo, this Tuesday (22). The National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) summoned the energy distributor Enel, which operates in São Paulo, due to the blackout that affected millions of customers in São Paulo ten days ago. The agency’s act is part of the process against the concessionaire, which can withdraw from Enel the right to sell electricity to the population of São Paulo – expiration of the concession. 10/22/2024

It recently announced it an increase in tariffs for consumers in São Paulo. This adjustment will be implemented gradually, with most costs related to energy distribution. The decision was made with the objective of covering the company’s operating costs and ensuring the continuity of the services provided. Among the justifications for the increase are sectoral charges and currency variations that affect plants such as Eletrobras and Itaipu. In addition, the shortage of rainfall in the country has negatively impacted hydroelectric energy production, raising generation costs.

The increase, which will take effect next Friday (4), will be 13.94% for homes and small trades, while large trades and industries will face an increase of more than 15%. This measure will affect 26 municipalities and more than 8 million consumer units in the region covered by Enel. To illustrate, a $ 100 electricity bill will have an increase of nearly $ 14. In addition, light bills will remain in the red flag, which implies an additional $ 4.46 cost per 100 kWh consumed. Aneel’s decision did not pass without criticism.

The mayor of São Paulo, for example, spoke against the increase, defending the extinction of the contract with Enel. The regulatory agency was accused of being disconnected from the reality of consumers and being influenced by private initiative. Sector experts discuss the natural monopoly of the electricity sector, arguing that while private management may be more efficient, there is a lack of proper regulation and supervision. In addition, the rise in rates is also attributed to clean energy subsidies, which generates a debate on sustainability and associated costs.
