In the podcast the story is repeated, Henrique Monteiro and Lourenço Pereira Coutinho talk about the life and the “cause” of D. António, Prior do Crato
Son of Infante D. Luís, Duque de Beja, and Violante Gomes, nicknamed “The Pelican”, D. António was a candidate for the succession of D. Sebastião after the death of this king in the battle of Alcácer Quibir. Then he argued that his parents had been secretly married, which gave him precedence in the line of succession about Cardinal D. Henrique, who effectively inherited the throne. Two years later, during the death of the Cardinal-Rei (January 1580), he returned to complain his rights to the Portuguese Crown, and was then defeated by the army commanded by the Duke of Alba that Felipe II of Spain sent to Portugal.
Between 1582 and 1583, the cause of D. António remained alive in the Azores, and was then recognized as king on Terceira Island. However, the forces of D. António were won by those of the Marquis of Santa Cruz in 1583. From then on, and until his death in 1595, D. António lived between France and England, where he sought to keep his “cause,” supported above by the New Christian community. Who was D. António, Prior do Crato? What is the validity of your claims to the throne of Portugal? And did it become king of Portugal, even for a short time?
A relaxed dialogue around the story, its greatest characters and events. ‘The story is repeated’ is not a class, but wants to arouse curiosity for the past and build bridges with the present.
