Industrial production drops 0.5% in May, says IBGE

This was the 2nd negative monthly result followed; Sector advanced 2.8% in the accumulated 12 months

Industrial production fell 0.5% in May compared to April in the seasonal adjustment series. This was the 2nd consecutive month of falling in the sector. The (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) released the result this Wednesday (2.Jul.2025). This is the publication (PDF – 1 MB).

Brazil’s industrial production grew 3.3% in May compared to the same month of 2024, in the series without seasonal adjustment. In accumulated of the year, it rose 1.8%. He advanced 2.8% in 12 months.

According to IBGE, there was a drop in 13 of the 25 industrial branches surveyed in May compared to April. The main negative influences were motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (-3.9%), bun, oil-derived products and biofuels (-1.8%), food products (-0.8%), metal products (-2.0%), drinks (-1.8%), clothing and accessory and furniture articles and furniture. (-2.6%).

On the other hand, there was a discharge of 11 of the 25 activities surveyed. The highlights were:

  • extractive industries (0.8%);
  • Farmochemical and Pharmaceutical Products (3.0%);
  • rubber and plastic material products (1.6%);
  • leather artifacts, travel items and shoes (3.2%);
  • and chemicals (0.6%).

In considering the 4 major economic categories, IBGE said there was a drop in 3:

  • durable consumer goods (-2.9%);
  • capital goods (-2.1%);
  • Semi and non-durable consumer goods (-1.0%).

The intermediate goods rose 0.1% in May compared to April, the 4th consecutive month rise.
