The president boards this Wednesday to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he will participate in the Mercosur summit. Before heading to the Argentine capital, the President compromises in Salvador, Bahia, where he participates in the Bahia Independence Day celebrations, celebrated on July 2. On Tuesday, Lula sent to the National Congress a project to turn the date into a national celebration, without holiday, highlighting the historical importance of the event for the independence of Brazil. The president’s agenda in Salvador includes a civic parade in the morning, before boarding Argentina in the early afternoon.

At the Mercosur summit, which takes place between July 2 and 3, Brazil will temporarily assume the presidency of the bloc. In addition, Lula is expected to visit former Argentine President Cristina Kirchner, who is under house arrest, although the visit depends on permits. The Presidency’s Secretariat of Social Communication stressed that the proposal to make Bahia’s Independence Day a national date aims to recognize the role of Bahians in Brazil’s independence. President Lula stressed in social networks that the date is little known, but significant, as it marks the definitive expulsion of the Portuguese of Brazil in 1823.
