Just a few steps and suddenly you find yourself between lavender bushes, where thyme smells in the air, hot stone radiates with heat and somewhere nearby a quietly bubbling fountain. No, you don’t have to go to Provence. Just a small change in your garden – a little inspiration from the south of France and an ordinary corner behind the house will turn into a quiet refuge with an atmosphere like a holiday.
The Provencal Garden has a special charm. At first glance, it looks calm, fragrant and natural – as if time has stopped there. Her charm is not perfection, but in harmony. Stone, lavender, thyme, terracotta pots and warm sun give the impression that you have found yourself somewhere in the south of France, in a landscape drenched by light and filled with the smell of herbs. And what is the best? You can transfer this charm to your own garden, whether you live in the city or in the countryside.
“I like the gardens of France, Provance and its vintage style. The French have relaxed in them, it can only be quietly envied. They can easily bring the furniture out of the interior, where they leave it under the olive tree for 14 days and have no problem with it,” says garden architect Ferdinand Leffler.

Mediterranean atmosphere breathes on you
The basis is the Mediterranean mood – a minimum of ornamental and maximum natural beauty. Instead of the English lawn, there is gravel, pedal or natural tiles, which are rustic and do not require demanding maintenance. Plants are not planted in strict order, but they coincide freely – as if they decided to grow. This natural appearance is typical of Provence. In addition to lavender, rosemary and sage, you can also reach the olive tree in a pot, vines or fragrant jasmine, which can be run after a pergola.
Furniture is an essential part of Provencal style. Metal benches, round tables with patina and wicker chairs complement the overall atmosphere and attract to relax in the shade. If you have the option, add a water element – a small fountain or a stone with a gushing strand. The sound of water has a special soothing power in this environment.
Fine colors that will warm you up
The colors should be fine – white, creamy, light blue and sand shades beautifully fits with the warm character of this landscape. In addition, terracotta pots, ceramics, old clay amphora or wicker baskets and the atmosphere is suddenly complete. And do not forget the light – simple lanterns, candles or chains with bulbs in the evening play the garden in a completely different way.
The Provencal Garden is not about pomp, but about feeling. It should be cozy, warm and fragrant – one where you like to sit with a book, a glass of wine or just watch the light between the lavender. And that’s what her strength is.
