Prison Guard Heads called for strike on July 17

The union that calls the strike says that “the prison system cannot stand” the “disorder and randomness of management” of services. “Disorientation, inertia and indecision, and the absence of proactivity will cause disgrace,” says the association, which calls for measures to make the profession of prison guard attractive.

“Disorientation, inertia and indecision, and absence of proactivity, will cause disgrace,” says ASCCGP, adding that “it will not be able to impute negligence and responsibility to workers, but to the state.”

Since the escape of five prisoners from the Vale de Jewish High Security chain in September 2024 that security issues in prisons have been under discussion, the episode was motivated by the resignation of the then Director General of Reinsertion and Prison Services and Audits to Prisons by Order of Justice, Rita Alarcão Júce.

Prison guards have insisted that the lack of staff compromises the security of prisons.

Speaking to Lusa on Prison Guard Day, on June 27, the president of the National Union of the Prison Guard, Frederico Morais, expressed concern for the situation of insecurity and degradation in prisons, but said he had “total confidence” in the Minister of Justice to resolve them.
