Event is organized by STF Minister Gilmar Mendes, through the Brazilian Institute of Teaching, Development and Research (IDP), of which he is a partner
The Senate will fund the trip of six senators to Lisbon this week to participate, on an official mission, in the Forum organized by the Federal Supreme Court () Minister, through the Brazilian Institute of Teaching, Development and Research (IDP), of which he is a partner. The removal of parliamentarians from the country needs to be communicated to the directors of the Chamber and the Senate, to whom it will be responsible for authorizing the trip of the applicants. Deputies and senators can opt for two ways to leave the country: on an official mission, representing the house of which it is part, or only as a participant in a particular event, which also requires communication to the command of the agency to leave the country. Parliamentarians can also choose whether to leave the country with or without burden to the institution of which they are part – that is, whether they want to be refunded by all existing spending on the trip or not.
Among the six senators who communicated to the Board of Directors the desire to participate in the Lisbon Forum, all asked to travel on an official mission and with burden on the Senate. They are: Irajá (PSD-TO), Eduardo Gomes (PL-TO), Daniela Ribeiro (PP-PB), Marcio Bittar (Union-AC), Angelo Coronel (PSD-BA) and Laércio Oliveira (PP-SE). Parliamentarians have up to 90 days to present spending notes and be reimbursed. Senators Eduardo Gomes and Daniela Ribeiro reported the Senate that will participate in another event in Lisbon, besides the Forum. The forum organizers also confirmed the participation of Senators Ciro Nogueira (PP-PI) and Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG). The president of the Senate, (União Brasil-AP), was announced as a speaker, but will not travel to Lisbon because of the discomfort with the government caused by the overthrow of the Decree of Financial Operations Tax (IOF).
The report requested the House the list of all deputies who asked the country to leave the country with the purpose of participating in the Forum, whether on an official mission or not. The house denied sharing the information, which are public access in the Senate, and did not say who will fund the departure of parliamentarians to the event. So far, twelve deputies have been announced as speakers in the Forum, including the mayor, (Republicans-PB). The event is held at the University of Lisbon and verses on various topics, from the right to technological changes, but it is the parallel activities and outside the academic scope that mobilize part of the participants.
In addition to the political class, the event brings together entrepreneurs from large companies, lawyers of the most renowned offices in the country and academics. The union of these different groups, but that can share common interests, makes parties, lunches, tours and dinners organized parallel to the event separately and highly crowded.
In last year’s edition, BTG offered a Happy Hour outside the official agenda of the event for judiciary and legislative authorities at the luxurious Sud Lisboa restaurant. The cocktail was played between lawyers and lobbyists. The place was designed for authorities and entrepreneurs to have more privacy.
