Spain launches a new initiative to reinforce global health in Seville
The president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced on Wednesday in Seville a new initiative for action for global health, with a financial commitment of 315 million euros for the 2025-2027 period. The proposal, which seeks to reform the international sanitary ecosystem, includes an increase in contributions to the World Fund for the Fight against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; 130 million for the Gavi Vaccination Alliance; and 60 million for the World Health Organization (WHO). “No matter how high the walls between borders: no virus stops in customs,” said Sánchez. “If it is not by moral conviction, let’s do it to guarantee the health of our citizens,” he added. The Spanish proposal comes in a context marked by the replication of some traditional donors and the rise of misinformation, also a health.
“We are at a critical moment: cuts to help, interruptions in services, millions of people without access to essential medicines,” said WHO general secretary, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who stressed that this new initiative can mark a turning point to move towards a more “resilient, sustainable and equitable sanitary coverage”, with an improved governance system and a greater mobilization of both national resources as international.
