Violent lethality in RJ falls 13.7%, but thefts grow

State registered the lowest rate since 1991 in May, with a total of 308 victims

Violent lethality in the state of Rio de Janeiro fell 13.7% in May 2025 compared to the same period of 2024. According to data from ISP (Institute of Public Security), released on Monday (30.Jun.2025), this is the smallest number for May since the beginning of the historical series in 1991.

There were 308 victims in the month, against 357 in the same period last year. Among the offenses that make up violent lethality, there is a reduction in deaths from state agent intervention, which have been halfway through the previous year-from 84 to 44, the smallest number for May since 2015.

Dolosa homicide also dropped: 255 victims were in the period, a 1.5% reduction compared to the same month last year, registering the lowest rate for May since 2022.

Nevertheless, other indicators remained on the rise, such as cell phone theft, which had 4,140 occurrences in May 2025 against 3,470 in May D3 of 2024, being an increase of 19%.

Theft of people in collectives is also high: it was 741 in May 2025 against 617 in the same period last year, with an increase of 20%.

Another rate that is on the rise is bicycle theft. In May this year there were 413 bikes taken, against 349 in May 2024. These figures represent an increase of 18%.

According to the data, police productivity also maintained positive results in the state of Rio de Janeiro in the first 5 months of the year. From January to May, 322 rifles were seized, with an increase of 5% over the same period of 2024 and average two seizures per day.

Security forces also seized 2,687 firearms and made 17,927 arrests in the act –119 per day on average.

In coping with drug trafficking, 10,459 seizures were performed, 5% more than in 2024. In May alone, 2,217 seizures, number 1.9% higher than the same month last year.

Crimes such as vehicle theft also dropped throughout the state. There were 1,688 records in May 2025, which represents a 31.5% reduction compared to the same month last year. Street thefts ran out of 0.3% in the month.
