Athens – Near the tourist city of Ierapetra in the southeast of the popular, Greek holiday island of Crete has broken out. Some hotels, guest houses and three villages had to be evacuated. “We housed around 1,500 people in other hotels and in a sports hall,” said the person responsible for the civil protection in the region, Giorgos Tambakis, on Thursday on radio (Ertnews). Because of strong winds, the flames have spread quickly since late Wednesday afternoon.
