Portuguese striker Diogo Jota, Liverpool, died in a car accident near Zamora, northwestern Spain, along with his brother, the Portuguese Football Federation said on Thursday (3).

The Castela and Leão Regional Department of Fire Department, where Zamora is located, said on his website that a car collided at dawn, right after midnight, and caught fire with two men, 28 and 26 years old. Both were found dead.

“We lost two champions. Your deaths represent irreparable losses to Portuguese football, and we will do everything we can to honor your legacy every day,” said the Portuguese Football Federation in a statement.

The Lamborghini in which the brothers traveled left the road, probably after a tire burst during an overtaking.

The bodies were taken to a city near Zamora, where autopsies will be held.

Jota, who married on June 28, helped Liverpool win the Premier League last season and also won the FA Cup and the League Cup with the Merseyside club.

He arrived in Anfield from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and scored 65 goals in 182 apparents for the club in all competitions.

He also made 49 appearances for Portugal, twice overcoming the UEFA League.

Liverpool said it was devastated by the death of Diogo Jota and called for privacy for the family, friends and teammates “as they try to deal with an unimaginable loss.”
