A large -scale defense agreement is expected to be signed on July 17 and, on the basis of last year’s joint statement by the then Chancellor Olf Saltz and the British Prime Minister.

According to a report by Politico magazine, the agreement will refer to a closer cooperation between the two countries on peace, security and economic development, and will also include a threat of mutual aid clause.

Mutual assistance clause

One of the main funds of the agreement will be for defense and will be based on the Trinity House agreement signed last year and stipulates that any strategic threat to one country would equate with a threat against the other. This, after the corresponding plans with France, would give Germany a clause of mutual aid with both Europe’s nuclear forces, as the wish of Chancellor Friedrich Mertz is to strengthen the deterrent power of Epirus regardless of the US.

The agreement, however, clarifies in the report, will confirm the two countries’ commitment to NATO as a cornerstone of their collective defense, with a reference to the mutual aid clause underline the impetus to the European allies for closer cooperation in the US defense.

The text will also include references to the measures to tackle illegal immigration, transport and research, as well as a commitment to promote cross -border exchanges – a sensitive issue for the Starmer government, which is facing pressure to reduce both legal and illegal immigration.

Object of negotiation at EU level

As Politico points out, any agreement refers to the mobility of the two countries’ young people should be negotiated at the level of European Union, as Britain has not been able to reach an agreement in this area. Germany is one of the countries that are most pushing for the release of regulations on young people arriving in Britain.

The German -British agreement is the result of 18 rounds of negotiations and, according to the German Foreign Ministry, “will deal with the full range of relations” of the two countries.
