Lula government questioned COP30 hotels about abusive prices

Arm of the Ministry of Justice, Senacon investigates unfair adjustments and availability of beds; Event in Belém will be in November

The Government of the President (PT), through Senacon (National Consumer Secretariat), formally notified 24 accommodation establishments on possible “Abusive practices” Regarding the prices of the daily offered to delegations for the COP30 (United Nations Conference on Climate Change).

According to Senacon, arm of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, the letters sent have “Preventive character and aim to investigate possible abusive practices and atypical increases in daily prices in the context of COP30.”

Information requests include hotel categorization (how many stars is), average rates from 2019 to 2024 and a justification for high than 50% during COP. This is the notification (PDF – 210 kb).

If hotel entities do not respond to the notification within the deadline, they will be subject to sanctions based on the Consumer Protection Code. Penalizations may be fines related to the severity of the act analyzed, in addition to the agency to include the hotel in the National Register of Founded Complaints -a list of bad service providers.

Like the Poder360ABIH (Brazilian Hotel Industry Association) classified Senacon’s notification as a “Dusty Request” of the Lula government.

According to the president of ABIH, Tony Santiago, the “Threats” of the government to interfere with the negotiations between delegations and accommodation establishments have the “Sole purpose to harm the progress of negotiations.”

About notification, Senacon says that “Reaffirms its commitment to legality and the protection of consumer rights, especially in large events and international impact, such as COP 30”.
