Ryanair will implement significant changes in its free cabin baggage policy, known as hand luggage. These changes arise in response to new European Commission plans to standardize the rules between airlines operating in the community space.
Current Measures of Hand Baggage
Currently, Ryanair allows passengers to transport a hand bag with 40x25x20 cm measures, totaling a capacity of 20 liters.
However, this reality will change in late October 2025, with the entry into force of the new winter season of Aviation, says Daily Express.
New Dimension for Free Baggage
With this change, the permitted dimensions for cabin luggage in Ryanair will become 40x30x15 cm.
This new format reduces the total capacity to 18 liters, less two liters than the current policy in force. The decision arises after negotiations between the Airlines for Europe (A4E) and the European Transport Commissioner, Adina Vélean.
Objective of standardizing practices in the sector
Airlines for Europe (A4E), of which Ryanair is part, said all member companies will adopt these guaranteed dimensions by the end of the summer season of 2025, according to the same source.
This measure aims to create a common pattern to facilitate passenger experience, regardless of the airline used. According to A4E, the goal is to ensure greater clarity and predictability for travelers across Europe.
A4E statements on change
Ourania Georgogoutsakou, director general of A4E, explained that the decision aligns members of the organization with resolutions taken by the Member States in the previous month. “From passengers traveling in urban escapes to families on vacation, all will benefit from the same rule in all associated companies,” said the official, quoted by the same source.
The changes come into force at the beginning of the civil aviation winter season, which starts at the end of October of each year.
Other companies maintain current rules
Despite the uniformity promoted by A4E, several companies will continue with the previously established dimensions for free luggage.
These include British Airways, Jet2 and Easyjet, whose current permissions exceed the new standardized measures. Easyjet, for example, will maintain its 45x36x20 cm franchise, allowing a maximum volume of 32 liters.
Ryanair as the main company to apply the change
According to, Ryanair will be one of the only major airlines to implement these changes next year.
An Easyjet spokesman confirmed that the company does not expect to change the dimensions of cabin luggage, maintaining the current conditions for its passengers.
These changes should impact on the organization of travelers who choose Ryanair for their travels throughout Europe.
