Four people died, 38 are missing and 23 survived a ferry boot with 65 occupants near Bali Island, according to the country’s search and rescue service.
The KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya sank almost half an hour after departing from the port of Baniuguangi in East Java province to Bali late Wednesday night.
The ship transported 53 passengers and 12 crew members, as well as 22 vehicles. The missing company is underway, but is hampered by strong currents and winds.
No official announcement has been issued on passenger nationalities, but a list of passengers shown by the Metrotv news channel shows that there were no foreign passengers. The Indonesian Presidency estimated that bad weather probably played a role in the accident.
Ferry is a common means of transport to Indonesia, an archipelago with more than 17,000 islands, and accidents are often, as loose security standards often allow overload of ships without sufficient rescue.

In 2018, over 150 people had lost their lives at the ferry wreck in Lake Toba, from the deepest in the world, on the island of Sumatra.
In 2022 ferry, which carried over 800 people, he hung up in the province of Nousa Tengara Timur (east) and remained trapped for two days before being released. There had been no injury to that event.
In 2023 a small ferry was overthrown near the island of Sulauezi, Indonesia, killing at least 15 people.
