Winning career
Jota began his professional career at Paços de Ferreira before signing with Atletico Madrid in 2016 (where he never played) and spent the 2016-17 season to Porto, where his brother played in the grassroots categories.
However, it was his transfer to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2017 in the English second division, only 21, who saw him emerge as a soccer player.
In three seasons, he scored 44 goals, helping Wolves to reach the first division and attracting the attention of a British football giant: the Liverpool FC.
In 2020, he was hired for an amount close to $ 50 million.
In his five seasons with the English club, Jota has become a constant presence in the club’s biggest achievements in recent years: two English Championship titles, the Premier League, in 2022 and 2025, and the 2022 Champions League final, lost to Real Madrid.
During these years at Liverpool, Jota scored 56 goals and gave 19 assists. For Portugal, Jota scored 14 goals in 49 matches.
In addition to its exceptional club performances, it was also fundamental for the achievements of the Portuguese national team in recent seasons.
Jota debuted for the national team in March 2019, in the 2020 Euro qualifiers.
Although I could not participate in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar due to an injury, its goals and assists led Portugal to the UEFA League title in June.
Liverpool FC issued a statement claiming to be “devastated” with the news and called for privacy for their family and club staff while dealing with Jota’s death.
Wolverhampton Wanderers published in his X account: “We are heartbroken. Diogo was worshiped by our fans, loved by his teammates and appreciated by everyone who worked with him during his time at Wolves.”
The captain of the Portuguese team, Cristiano Ronaldo, also expressed his sadness for the death of his teammate.
“It makes no sense. We were together in the national team and you had just married. Your family, your wife and your children, send my condolences and desire all the strength of the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will miss you a lot.”
