(Reuters)-The number of Americans who filed new unnecessary requests fell to the lowest level in six weeks last week, but the total of people who continued to receive the benefits after the initial week remained at the highest level in almost four years the week before.

Initial unemployment requests fell in 4,000 to 233,000 in seasonal adjustment-the smallest since mid-May-on June 28, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Economists consulted by Reuters predicted 240,000 requests for last week.

The total number of people in the benefit lists remained unchanged on the week closed on June 21, at 1.964 million, which is the highest level since the fall of 2021.
