Although it seems harmless, prolonged use of the strap can have negative effects

The abdominal strap is an elastic band that involves the region of. It is often recommended after abdominal surgeries – such as caesarean sections, hernias, gallbladder, among others – with the aim of “holding” the belly, reducing pain and giving more safety to movement. Many patients report to feel relief when using it, especially in the early days after. The sense of protection and firmness can help walk more safely and even breathe with less discomfort.

What do the studies say?

Recent scientific research indicates that use of the strap can help reduce pain and increase comfort in the early days after surgery. This makes it easier for the patient to get up, walk and return to light activities more quickly – which is very positive. However, when it comes to preventing more serious complications, such as points, liquid accumulation (seroma), infection or even future hernies, studies show that the strap makes no significant difference. That is: it can help with pain relief, but it does not replace medical care or prevent more serious complications.

Beware of prolonged use

Although it seems harmless, the prolonged use of the strap can have negative effects. One is the weakness of the belly muscles, which can be “lazy” if the strap is used for a long time. Another risk is to disrupt breath, especially in people who already have lung disease. And if the patient feels too dependent on the strap, he may end up moving less, which increases the risk of problems such as thrombosis.

When to use – and how long?

According to experts, the strap can be used for short periods (3 to 7 days) after surgery, especially if the patient feels pain or insecurity to move. Ideally, use is always oriented by a doctor or physical therapist, and that it will be accompanied by early movement, breathing exercises and other care of recovery.

Conclusion

The abdominal strap is not a villain, but neither is it a miraculous solution. It may be an ally in pain control, but should not be used as a way to avoid more serious complications. As with all surgical recovery, the most important thing is to follow medical guidelines, stay active within safe limits and take care of food and hydration.
