Craft Brewery of Loulé awarded for transforming waste into food innovation

Dreche crackers, produced by Nova Vida Beer, ran second in the 1st edition of the “Innovation Award – Mediterranean Diet”, an initiative that aims to “promote innovation in the agrifood sector, in the context of the Tavira Mediterranean Diet Fair”.

The CCDR Algarve IP Algarve Coordination and Regional Development Commission spoke to the winners to “understand the meaning of this distinction for each and their business areas, in order to inspire future candidates and give visibility to successful examples that value and preserve the principles of the Mediterranean diet”.

The New Life Beer is a family project based in Loulé, where “projects, produces, bottling and distributes all its beers.” Drach crackers, created from the reuse of cereal waste resulting from the brewing process of beer, represent “an example of how it is possible to combine environmental commitment and creativity in the agri -food sector.”

Although still under development, the company points out that it is necessary to “effect the nutritional analysis of crackers and get an industrial kitchen for their production”. However, they ensure that “they are already thinking of partnerships with local producers, to create varieties of crackers (herbs, cheeses).”

According to project promoters, Drach crackers are “oriented towards reuse of products, local circuits and appreciation of local products.” The New Life Beer intends to “bring something innovative and healthy to the market” and stresses that this product “follows very well what we have already produced, craft beer”.

The company also recognizes “the importance of reinforced support for project development, facing it as an opportunity to enhance its growth.” However, it admits that “simultaneous management of ongoing activity presents challenges, namely access to the right interlocutors and defining the steps necessary for their realization”.

The Innovation Award-Mediterranean Diet is promoted by CCDR Algarve, together with the Municipality of Tavira-as a representative community of the Mediterranean diet in Portugal-the In-Loco Association, an entity that articulates with the producers of the Mediterranean Diet Fair, and the Mutual Agricultural Credit Box, responsible for the assignment of the three monetary premiums.

With this distinction, it aims to “select, disseminate and reward projects developed in the Algarve region that have an innovative character”, being eligible “projects/producers/companies represented at the Mediterranean Diet Fair” and that stand out in the “agri -food area aligned with the principles of the Mediterranean diet”.
