Firefighters in several areas in the east of Germany fought fires during Thursday. The authorities have declared an emergency in four districts, TASR reports according to DPA report.
Extinguishing a fire on the border of Saxony and Brandenburg is complicated by an unexploded ammunition
Forest fire in Gohrischheide on the border between Saxony and Brandenburg federal countries worsened as a result of the stronger wind and terrain contaminated by the unexploded ammunition that complicated extinguishing. The fire broke out on Tuesday in the territory of the former military training ground. According to the representatives there, the scope of this fire is currently unclear. According to firefighters located directly in the field, it is estimated that flames cover an area of 1000 hectares.
The fire extinguisher is extremely dangerous and complicated as the ammunition buried in the ground detonates. Firefighters cannot directly fight flames, but must remain at a safe distance of 1000 meters. The number of intervening staff has increased to 500, adds DPA.
The forest fire also threatened the habitat of rare animals and plants. UTZ Hempfling, President of the Regional Forestry Office, noted that Gohrischheide is the fourth largest nature reserve in Saxony. They declared an emergency due to a forest fire for the districts of Zeithain and Wülknitz, as well as for the city of Gröditz.
Burns in several other areas of Germany
The flames also spread to the south of the durín country in Saalfelder Höhe, where they also declared an emergency. This fire has been considered unprecedented in Dunínsk as unprecedented for the past three decades – this is the largest forest fire recorded in this Land since 1993.
The wind was strong and changed the direction, which complicated the extinguishing and can cause the flames to reopen. There were 420 firefighters and rescuers on the spot.
Fires are also plagued by other areas of East Germany, adds DPA. Fire near Jüterbog in Brandenburg managed to get under control. The flames burned 165 hectares.
Forest fires also burned in Bavaria. The largest forest fire, allegedly in the Upper Falck region, hit an area of approximately 14,000 square meters (1.4 hectares), the local district administration said.
