Department releases 4 doors of the Full Protection System; Another 4 follow closed
The DMAE (Municipal Department of Water and Sewage) of Porto Alegre (RS) reopened, this Thursday (3.Jul.2025), 4 of the comports of the system that protects the state capital against eventual floods of Lake Guaíba.
The municipal authority decided to reopen passages 1, 2, 4 and 6, in the Mauá pier, after discarding, for now, the risk of the waters of the river overflowing, as the Guaíba level has been lowering little by little.
“Guaíba is declining, as well as most of its tributaries. The experts consulted by DMAE point out that the possibility of exceeding the flood quota is very reduced,” DMAE Executive Director Vicente Perrone said in a statement.
Another 4 floodgates (11, 12, 13 and 14) will not yet reopen. They were also closed in the last week of June, when Guaíba level exceeded the 3 -meter -deep flood quota.
“The forecast is that the definitive closure of comports 11 and 13, as well as half of the 14, is completed in 6 months. The replacement of passage 12 and another half of the 14 will take 10 months.”reported the DMAE.
In works since May, the Porto Alegre Protection System of Fulls currently has 11 floodgates.
Also according to the department, of the 14 complogenas that worked when the system restructuring began, 3 of them (3, 5 and 7) have been closed on a definitive basis. Gates 1, 2, 4 and 6 received improvements, including sealing and mobility adjustments.
The rains that reached part of Rio Grande do Sul along the second half of June caused at least 5 deaths and forced about 9,000 people to leave their homes throughout the state.
