Lula warns that Brazil will not give up its oil: "This is how we will enrich our people"

The Brazilian president’s statement occurred during the announcement of a multimillionaire investment of Petrobras in projects to promote green fuels

Brazilian President Lula da Silva said on Friday that he is favorable to the end of fossil fuels, but said he will not give up oil to “others explore”, referring indirectly to oil near the Amazon.

During a speech at a Petrobras refinery in Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian president rejected “to give up the Brazilian oil for others to explore”, but said he wants the country to get oil “as healthy and responsible as possible”.

“We do not want to harm anything, but we do not want to give up our wealth (…). It is with this oil that we will enrich our people,” he added.

Although he did not directly mention, Lula da Silva referred to the controversial deepwater oil exploration project near the mouth of the Amazonas, on the equatorial margin.

The exploration of hydrocarbons in the region is seen with concern for non -governmental organizations and environmental activists due to the impact that a possible spill can have on the area, considered extremely sensitive to social and environmental issues.

The statement of the Brazilian president occurred during the announcement of a multimillionaire investment of Petrobras in projects to promote green fuels.

The Brazilian oil company reported that it will invest nearly 33 billion reais (5.2 billion euros) to increase the production of renewable fuels and improve the country’s energy efficiency, which will generate more than 38,000 direct and indirect jobs.

At the ceremony, Petrobras also released the production phase of fuel with renewable content, such as Diesel R and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF, from the acronym in English Sustainable Aviation Fuel) for co -processing, and new studies and projects in the petrochemical area also involving its backed Braskem.

The investment will include a factory for renewable diesel production and aviation bioqueroosene, with a production capacity of 19,000 renewable fuel barrels per day, and two new gas thermoelectric units in the Boaventura Complex.
