At least 40 people suffered injuries on Friday morning at the explosions at the gas station (LPG) in the Italian capital Rome. There are at least one firefighter, eight police officers and one member of the Emergency Medical Service, TASR reports on the basis of Ansa, Sky TG24 television and La Repubblica.
16 civilians were also injured, two of them are hospitalized in a serious condition in the Polinico Casilino hospital. They pulled one man out of a burning car and is in serious condition.
The incident occurred in the east of Rome on Via Dei Dei Gordiani. What exactly happened on the spot is still detected. The emergency services were originally called for an accident that happened near the gas station when the tanker crashed into the pipeline when the LPG was overdue. Subsequently, the gas began to escape and shortly after 8.00 am there was a massive explosion that hit rescuers and civilians. Shortly thereafter, there was another explosion.
Evacuated buildings near
The explosions damaged several surrounding buildings and could be heard in a large part of the city. The flames also engulfed the area behind the gas station, where the vehicles were shut down and were also there in oxygen bottles.
Two buildings near the gas station had to be evacuated. The nearby Teano metro station on line C was preventively closed. The summer camp was also evacuated, where there were eight children at that time. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spoke with the mayor Rome Robert Gualtrimi by phone and informed about the situation at the scene of the accident.
Pope Leo XIV also expressed his deep participation after the incident. “I pray for all that this explosion has hit, and I am afraid of further developments,” he wrote on his account on the X -Network.
The prosecutor’s office in Rome has begun an investigation into a negligent bodily harm, waiting for information from firefighters and police forces.
