Hamas announced on Friday that he accepted the terms of the ceasefire agreement for the war against Israel in the Gaza Strip. The decision paves the way for a 60 -day truce in the conflict, after the government of Benjamin Netanyahu has already accepted the proposal mediated by the White House.

The agreement provides for the exchange of 28 Israeli hostages, including 18 dead by Palestinian prisoners in Israel. In addition, the Israeli army would be forced to leave regions in the northern Gaza Strip, where most conflicts between the military and Hamas occur.

Expectations and challenges

It is expected that the parties will be able to negotiate permanent peace during the two months of ceasefire. However, experts point to significant challenges to achieve a definitive agreement, given the complexity of the political scene in both Israel and Palestinians.

Lourival Sant’Anna, an international analyst at CNN Brazil, points out that “Hamas is very weakened, its military capabilities were practically destroyed by Israeli military action.” However, he points out that the objectives of Hamas and Israel at this time are irreconcilable, which can make a definitive peace agreement difficult at the end of the 60 days.

Humanitarian issues and reconstruction

A crucial aspect of the agreement is the possibility of humanitarian advances. The UN can be expected to resume responsibility for humanitarian aid in the region, replacing the current Israeli government agency, whose acting has been the subject of criticism.

The reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, practically destroyed by the conflict, is also a theme that should be addressed. Paulo Filho, a master’s degree in military sciences, states that “reconstruction is absolutely necessary” and mentions that Gulf Arab countries have already made themselves available to finance this process.

The war in the Gaza Strip, which began on October 7, 2023 after an attack by Hamas south of Israel, has left more than 64,000 dead. The ceasefire, materialized, would represent an important step in relieving the suffering of the civilian population and paving the way for broader negotiations aiming at a lasting solution to the conflict.
